The singular ماعون (māʕūn) which is likely a borrowing from other Arabic varieties appears in the name of some plates signifying "dish of" or "plate of", for example in ماعون مشكل (māʕūn mšakkal, “a dish of mixed grilled meats”, literally “dish of mixed (grills)”) and ماعون كباب (māʕūn kabāb).
