Etymology[edit]

From perhaps both Classical Syriac ܢܘܫܐ (nawšã, coffin, sarcophagus; tomb, sepulchre) and ܢܘܣܐ (nawsā, charnel, repository for the dead), derived from Ancient Greek νᾱός (nāós, innermost part of a temple, sanctuary, or shrine); applied historically by Greek sources to describe the burial chamber and sarcophagus found in the innermost of a Pyramid.
