Inherited from Prakrit चंदभागा (caṃdabhāgā), from Sanskrit चन्द्रभागा (candrabhāgā), from चन्द्र (candra) +‎ भाग (bhāga) +‎ -आ (, feminine suffix). Compare Punjabi جَھناں (jhanāṉ) / ਝਨਾਂ (jhanā̃) and Hindustani چَنَاب (canāb) / चनाब (canāb).
