Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic كِرْيَاس (kiryās). In Arabic, this is a rooftop privy whose contents fall outside the house; however, in Persian, the meaning was changed early on to refer to the place where the contents would fall, i.e. immediately outside the gate.

     به کریاس گفت ای سرای امید

     xunak rōz k-andar tu bud jamšēd
     humāyūn budī gāh-i kāwus kay

     He said at the threshold: "O residence of hope!
     "Blessed were the days when Jamshēd was within you,
     "You were august in the age of Kay Kāwus,
     "And in the days of Kay Khusraw, of fortunate steps."
