Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian TWRAmyš ‎(gāw-mēš, literally cow-sheep); compare Persian گاو ‎(gâv, cow) and میش ‎(mêš, ewe) for the constituents.

The Iranian word has been borrowed all over the Orient: compare Old Armenian գոմէշ ‎(gomēš), Classical Syriac ܓܡܘܫܐ ‎(gāmōšā), Arabic جاموس ‎(jāmūs), Georgian გამეში ‎(gameši), კამეჩი ‎(ḳameči), კამბეჩი ‎(ḳambeči), Chechen гомаш ‎(gomaš), Ossetian къамбец ‎(k’ambec).
