From Middle Persian [Term?], ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷṓws + *h₂eǵ-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬰𐬀 (gauuāza, ox-goad), Sanskrit गवजन (gavájana, whip, stick for driving cattle) and Old Armenian գաւազան (gawazan) (a loanword).
