Etymology[edit]

This city was previously known as یالاق آباد (Yalak Âbâd), from یالاق (yalak, trough) + آباد (âbâd, prosperous). The current name appeared only in the 18ᵗʰ century and is assumed to be a contraction of یالی (yalı, shore, strand, beach) and اوا (ova, plain, lowland).
