Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (yštn' /⁠yaštan⁠/), borrowed from Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (yazaiti, to worship, to venerate), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hyáȷ́ati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁yaǵ-.
