From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾywk'), 𐫏𐫐 (yk /⁠ēwak⁠/), from Middle Persian: [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾy /⁠ē⁠/), [Inscriptional Pahlavi needed] (HD), 𐫙𐫏𐫇 (ʿyw /⁠ēw⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *Háywah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Háywas. Cognate with Bactrian ιωγο (iōgo).
