Modern learned borrowing from Aramaic אֲשׁוּר (ˀăšūr), from Akkadian 𒀸𒋩𒆠 (Aššūr, “Ashur”) the original capital named after the chief deity of that city. Doublet of ܐܵܬ݂ܘܿܪ (āṯōr).
