[edit]From Middle Persian *zarnīk, from Old Iranian *zarniyaka-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃-. Compare Arabic زِرْنِيخ (zirnīḵ) and Hebrew זַרְנִיךְ (zarnîḵ).
