From the older form ܛܵܐܸܡ (ṭāˀim), from Aramaic טם (ṭamm), with the /ṭ/, shifting to /č̣/ as observed in many words. Compare Classical Syriac ܛܡ (to stop a cavity by filling), Turoyo ܛܳܝܶܡ (ṭoyem, to close), and the variant form ܐܵܟ̰ܹܡ (āčēm) which experienced the same shift.
