From the older form ܛܵܐܸܡ (ṭāˀim), from Aramaic טם (ṭamm), with the /ṭ/, shifting to /č̣/ as observed in many words. Compare Classical Syriac ܛܡ (“to stop a cavity by filling”), Turoyo ܛܳܝܶܡ (ṭoyem, “to close”), and the variant form ܐܵܟ̰ܹܡ (āčēm) which experienced the same shift.
