Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, a contraction of ܠ- (lə-, to) + the construct state of ܐܦܘܬܐ (ʾappūṯā, forehead). Therefore literally, to the forehead of; compare also in Hebrew לְפִי (lefí, literally to the mouth of).
