From a pluralized form of the eventual noun ܡܸܪܕܵܐ (mirdā) in the sense of “fortified place, stronghold”. Hardly instead related to the name of the ancient Northwestern Iranian people called the Μάρδοι (Márdoi, Mardes) or Ἄμαρδοι (Ámardoi, Amardes), a term presumably identical to Persian مرد (mard, man).
