From Middle Persian *nārgīl[script needed], from Sanskrit नारिकेल ‎(nārikela, coconut). Compare Middle Persian anārgēl[script needed], Persian نارگیل ‎(nārgīl), Arabic نَارْجِيل ‎(nārǧīl), and Hindi नारिकेल ‎(nārikel).
