Assyrian Neo-Aramaic[edit]

ܣܦܕܝܬܐ

Etymology[edit]

From a metathesis of Aramaic בֵּיסָדְיָא (bēsāḏyā) with an initial /b/ resulting in /p/. Itself a contraction of בֵּית אִיסָדָא (bêṯ ʾĕsāḏā, literally place of the foundation; thing placed beneath to rest upon), ultimately Proto-Semitic in origin; compare also found in Classical Syriac ܒܣܕܝܐ (bēsāḏyā), as well as in Arabic وِسَادَة (wisāda), Hebrew יְסוֹד (yesód, base, foundation), Ugaritic 𐎊𐎒𐎄 (ysd, base, foundation) and Akkadian 𒅖𒁲 (/išdu/, base, foundation).
