Etymology

[edit]

From Persian کرد (kord, Kurdish, nomad) +‎ -ܝܐ (-āyā, the attributive adjective ending) or Northern Kurdish kurd, or a predecessor. Most likely ultimately from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (kwrt /kurd/), of uncertain origin, assumed from Proto-Indo-European *kerdʰ- (herd).

  • Also proposed is from ܩܲܪܕܘܵܝܵܐ (qardwāyā), from ܩܲܪܕܘܼ (qardū, region of Corduene) +‎ -ܝܐ (-āyā, the attributive adjective ending), though this would demand a highly irregular and unknown pattern shift. Both words existed simultaneously denoting different people.
