Etymology 1

Inherited from Sanskrit पुरा (purā, “before, formerly”). Cognate to Sinhalese පෙර (pera) and Hindi पुराब (purāb). Doublet of ފޫރުއްބަ (fūrubba), ޕޫރުބެ (pūrube), and ޕުރެ (pure)
