Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₃engʷ- (“to anoint”). Cognates include Latin ung(u)ō (“I anoint”), Old Armenian օծ (ōc, “chrism”) and Old High German ancho (“butter”).

The meaning of the root in the Rigveda has also been suggested to be "to cause to appear, reveal, make bright", presumably with a different etymology.
