From Proto-Indo-Aryan *(H)ukṣā́, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(H)ukšā́, from Proto-Indo-European *(h₂)uksḗn (“bull”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬎𐬑𐬱𐬁𐬥 (uxšān, “bull”), Gothic 𐌰𐌿𐌷𐍃𐌰 (auhsa), Welsh ych (“ox”), Breton oc'hen, Old English oxa (whence English ox).
