Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Hindi ऊंट (ūṃṭa), from ऊट (ūṭa) with spontaneous nasalization, from Sauraseni Prakrit उट्ट (uṭṭa), from Sanskrit उष्ट्र (uṣṭra, “camel”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *úštras (“camel, buffalo”). Doublet of उष्ट्र (uṣṭra). Cognate with Marathi उंट (uṇṭa) and Nepali उँट (ũṭ).
