    Inherited from Middle Hindi اونٿ (avnṭ /⁠ūṭ⁠⁠/) (c. 1609) / اوٿ (avṭ /⁠ūṭ⁠⁠/) (c. 1565),[1] from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀉𑀝𑁆𑀝 (uṭṭa), from Sanskrit उष्ट्र (úṣṭra, “camel”),[2] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *úštras. Doublet of شُتُر (śutur).

    Northwestern Indo-Aryan cognates include Punjabi اُوٹھ / ਊਠ (ūṭh), Saraiki اُٹھ (uṭh) and Sindhi اُٺُ (uṭhu). Also compare the Iranian cognates Pashto اُوښ (ūx̌) and Classical Persian اُشْتُر (uštur).
