Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘏𑘰𑘜𑘲 (khāṇī), 𑘏𑘰𑘡𑘲 (khānī), from Prakrit 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀺 (khāṇi), 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀻 (khāṇī), from Sanskrit खानि (khāni). Compare Konkani खण (khaṇ), Gujarati ખાણ (khāṇ), Hindustani کَھان (khān) / खान (khān).
