Hindi[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀔𑁄𑀧𑁆𑀧 (*khoppa, coconut shell) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-) + -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-).[1] There are a whole set of wildly varying yet similar forms of this word attested through New Indo-Aryan, pointing to a substrate borrowing: Sanskrit खर्पर (kharpara) (whence Hindi खप्पर (khappar), खप्पड़ (khappaṛ)), Ashokan Prakrit *𑀓𑁄𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀭 (*koppara), and perhaps Sanskrit कपाल (kapā́la).

Cognate with Punjabi ਖੋਪੜ (khopaṛ), Gujarati ખોપરી (khoprī), Nepali खोपडी (khopaḍī).
