From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gʰr̥náwti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥náwti, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰr̥-néw-ti, from *gʷʰer- (“warm, hot”). The Sanskrit root is घृ (ghṛ, “to shine, burn”).
