Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gʰr̥náwti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥náwti, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰr̥-néw-ti, from *gʷʰer- (warm, hot). The Sanskrit root is घृ (ghṛ, to shine, burn).
