Ultimately from Sanskrit जातिफल (jātiphala), जातीफल (jātīphala). Cognate with Gujarati જાયફળ (jāyaphaḷ), Hindi जायफल (jāyaphal), Punjabi ਜਾਇਫਲ (jāephal), Bengali জায়ফল (jayphôl), Assamese জাঁইফল (zãiphol).
