Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑁄𑀡𑁆𑀡𑀸𑀮𑀺𑀆 (joṇṇāliā), from Sanskrit यवनाल (yavanāla), योनल (yonala), perhaps from यवन (yavana, “foreign; Greek”) but more likely related to यव (yava, “barley”).
