Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *terd- (to drill, bore, split); compare Lithuanian trandė́ti (to thresh, grind, (of worms) to bite) and trandi̇̀s (woodworm), as well as Old Church Slavonic трѫдъ (trǫdŭ).[1][2] Whether the root is further related to Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (to rub, pierce) is unclear.
