From Proto-Indo-Aryan *tŕ̥ṣyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tŕ̥šyati, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥s-yé-ti (“to be dry”), from *ters- (“dry”). Cognate with Persian تشنه (tešne), Ancient Greek τέρσομαι (térsomai), Latin terra, Old Armenian թառամիմ (tʻaṙamim, “I wither”), Old English þurst (whence English thirst).
