Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀤𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺𑀡 (dakkhiṇa) without cluster simplification, from Sanskrit दक्षिण (dákṣiṇa, right (side), south), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dáćšinas, from Proto-Indo-European *déḱsinos, from *deḱs- (right (side)). Doublet of दक्षिण (dakṣiṇ). Cognate with Punjabi ਦੱਖਣ (dakkhaṇ).
