Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian دریا (daryā), from Middle Persian dlydʾp̄ (drayāb), from Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎹 (draya), from Proto-Iranian *jráyah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ráyas. Cognate with Sanskrit ज्रयस् (jrayas, “expanse”). Compare Bengali দরিয়া (doriẏa), Gujarati દરિયો (dariyo), Marathi दर्या (daryā), Punjabi ਦਰਿਆ (dariā), Santali ᱫᱚᱨᱭᱟ (dôrya).
