From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dyáti, Proto-Indo-Iranian *dyáti, from Proto-Indo-European *deh₁- (to bind). Cognate with Ancient Greek δέω (déō), Avestan 𐬥𐬍𐬛𐬌𐬌𐬁𐬙𐬄𐬨 (nī.diiātąm).
