[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀧𑀺𑀕𑀸𑀭𑀕 (*pigāraga) (compare 𑀧𑀺𑀆𑀭 m (piāra, “love”)), from Sanskrit प्रियकारक (priyakāraka). By surface analysis, प्यार (pyār) + -आ (-ā).
