Inherited from Old Marathi फुटणे (phuṭaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀨𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (phuṭṭaï), from Sanskrit स्फोटति (sphoṭati). Cognate to Konkani फुट्चे (fuṭce).
