Borrowed from Portuguese bomba, from Italian bomba, from Latin bombus (“a booming sound”), from Ancient Greek βόμβος (bómbos, “booming, humming, buzzing”). Compare Hindi बंबा (bambā) and Gujarati બંબો (bambo).
