Etymology

[edit]

Perhaps inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *HaHḷṇís (with Fortunatov's law), from Proto-Indo-Iranian [Term?], from Proto-Indo-European *Héh₃l-(e)n-is.[1] Compare Latin ulna. Burrow considers the "linchpin" or "axle" meanings to be separate, for which compare अणि (aṇi, the point of a needle or of a sharp stake).
