From Persian بغداد (Bağdâd), from Middle Persian [script needed] (bag-dād, bag-dāt, given by god), from Old Persian 𐏎𐎭𐎠𐎫 (bagadāta). Compare Sanskrit भगदत्त (bhagadatta, given by Bhaga).
