Compound of बात (bāt, “talk, matter”) + *चीत (*cīt), a term found only in this compound, from Prakrit 𑀘𑀺𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀺 (citti), from Sanskrit चित्ति (citti, “thought”). Cognate to Gujarati વાતચીત (vātcīt).
