Borrowed from Classical Persian بت (but), from Middle Persian, from Sogdian [script needed] (bwt, Buddha idol), from Sanskrit बुद्ध (buddha). Doublet of बुद्ध (buddh). Compare Bengali বুত (but), Punjabi ਬੁੱਤ (butta).
