From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀼𑀳 (muha), 𑀫𑀼𑀖 (mugha), from Sanskrit मुख (mukha, mouth, face, visage), from Proto-Indo-European *ment- (to chew; jaw, mouth).

Doublet of मुख (mukh), a tatsama.
