Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀫𑀼𑀲𑁆𑀲𑁆- (*muss-, smile, sob) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-), from Sanskrit मुस्र (musra, a tear), possibly further from अश्रु (aśru, a tear).
