From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hyátra, from Proto-Indo-European *Hyótro. Cognate with Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬚𐬭𐬀 (yaθra). Equivalent to य- (ya-) +‎ -त्र (-tra).
