Inherited from Old Marathi लहणे (lahaṇe), लिहणे (lihaṇe), लेहणे (lehaṇe), from Prakrit 𑀮𑀺𑀳𑀇 (lihaï), from Sanskrit लिखति (likhati). Cognate with Dogri लिखना (likhnā), Gujarati લખવું (lakhvũ), Hindi लिखना (likhnā), Nepali लेख्नु (lekhnu).
