Etymology

[edit]

An Indo-Aryan formation, from शुक्र (śukr) +‎ -इया (-iyā). Compare Bengali শুকরিয়া (śukriẏa), Dhivehi ޝުކުރިއްޔާ (šukuriyyā), Urdu شُکْرِیَہ (śukriya), Punjabi ਸ਼ੁਕਰੀਆ (śukrīā)/شُکْرِیَہ (śukriyah).

Unlikely to be a Perso-Arabic loan, as similar words in both languages are semantically unrelated. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Sure about this? See شُكْرِيَّة (šukriyya), + this word is more associated with the heavily Perso-Arabized Urdu than Hindi, the latter which is more associated with the definitely-Indic धन्यवाद (dhanyavād).”
