From Maharastri Prakrit *𑀙𑁂𑀧𑁆𑀧 (*cheppa), from Sanskrit शेप (śepa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(ć)šáypas, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeyp-o- (pole, stick). Compare Latin cippus.[1][2]
