Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Haryanvi हरियाणा (hariyāṇā), from Sauraseni Apabhramsa हरियाण (hariyāṇa) found in the works of the 1000s CE writer Vibudh Shridhar. Further, probably from a metathesis of Prakrit *𑀅𑀳𑀺𑀭𑀸𑀬𑀡 (*ahirāyaṇa), from 𑀅𑀳𑀺𑀭 (ahira), a variant of Prakrit 𑀆𑀳𑀻𑀭 (āhīra), from Sanskrit आभीर (ābhīra), the name of a community mentioned in the Mahabharata that inhabited area of present-day Haryana in ancient times.
