Inherited from Sanskrit অঞ্জস্ (añjas, ointment, mixture), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hánȷ́as, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hánǰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃éngʷos (fat, grease), from *h₃engʷ- (to smear, anoint). Cognate with Garhwali आँजु (āñju, collyrium), Latin unguen, dialectal German Anke.
