Etymology

Learned borrowing from Bihari -अत (-at), from Prakrit -𑀅𑀦𑁆𑀢 (-anta), from Sanskrit -অন্ত্ (-ant, active present participle). Related to -অন্ত (-onto) and -ইত- (-it-).

It has some pleonastic extensions in -আ (-a) and -ই (-i); in these forms, the initial /ɔ/ is often deleted due to unstressed syllabic position. In a few cases (e.g. জানত (janoto), পারত (paroto), করত (koroto)), the final /ɔ/ is pronounced, possibly due to a blend with -অন্ত (-onto).
