Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀢𑀺𑀕𑁆𑀕 (tigga), from Sanskrit তিগ্ম (tigma, sharp, pungent, hot), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tigmás, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tig-mó-s, from *(s)teyg- (to be sharp, pointed). Cognate with Bengali টেঙ্গা (ṭeṅga) and Kamta টেঙা (teṅa).
