Borrowed from Classical Persian نیلوفر (nīlūfar, lotus, water-lily), from Middle Persian [script needed] (nylwpl /⁠nīlōpal⁠/), from Sanskrit নীলোৎপল (nīlotpala, blue lotus), a compound of নীল (nīla, blue) +‎ উৎপল (utpala, lotus). Compare Hindi नीलोफ़र (nīlofar).
